ABSTRACT

The chapter includes teaching techniques aimed at developing speaking skills. The chapter clarifies what is meant by speaking which is viewed in terms of the ability to produce language to meet communicative functional needs of inter-personal communication at the word, phrase, memorized chunk, sentence, paragraph, and extended discourse levels. Included techniques aim at developing this range of abilities across the three intended proficiency levels: novice, intermediate, and advanced. The chapter includes techniques that are considered necessary to focus on speaking in isolation, especially at the beginning level, as well as techniques in which it is useful to integrate one or more skills in order to optimize learning and develop language skills in parallel.
