ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on teaching techniques for developing reading fluency and reading comprehension skills, along with implementing bottom-up and top-down processing as well as strategies for figuring out the meanings of words from the context and roots and patterns. Included techniques range from those that develop the ability to recognize written Arabic at the letter, morpheme, word, memorized chunk, and phrase levels to those at the sentence and simple text levels of basic everyday life topics to those at the paragraph and extended discourse levels. Included techniques are graded along the three intended proficiency levels: novice, intermediate, and advanced. Techniques also range from those that focus on isolation, especially at the novice level, to those which integrate other skills to optimize learning and develop language skills in parallel.
