ABSTRACT

Lessons 8, 9, and 10 address the cognitive or thinking part of cognitive behavioral therapy. These lessons focus on teaching people with language and learning challenges to pay attention to their “self-talk.” In other words, they are designed to help people stop and notice, and eventually change, how they think and talk to themselves. Lesson 8 is just about noticing thinking. Lesson 9 is about helping you see the connections between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so you can help the people you serve see these connections, as far as they are able. Lesson 10 presents some simple strategies for helping people change how they talk to themselves. As pre-therapy, these lessons are designed to help you help people who don’t easily recognize thoughts become more aware of them and start to practice talking to themselves differently and intentionally.
