ABSTRACT
This chapter examines lean implementation in higher education (HE) institutions. There is
evidence of lean initiatives beginning in HE in the US in the early 2000s; there is also some
evidence of business process improvement activity before this time (Hines and Lethbridge,
2008; Waterbury and Holm, 2011). Today, many universities and other HE institutions are
pursuing lean thinking.
