ABSTRACT

By addressing why parents and carers should be partners in their children's learning and how this partnership can be developed and enhanced by practitioners, it considers practical ways of involving parents and carers which can contribute to both the child's advancement and that of their families. This chapter discusses how to strengthen the engagement of parents and carers in their child's learning through open and effective channels of communication. When the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Information Report is prepared well with discussion it provides a framework for settings to consider their current provision for children with SEN, the strengths and weaknesses of this and how provision could be better. The benefit of parent and carer involvement is also manifested in the child's personality and behavioural variables, such as improvement of their self-image and of learning habits, reduction in disciplinary problems and absenteeism, and rise in their motivation.
