ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses China's relations with European nations and America. It reviews the present position of China vis-a-vis the nations of the West under two headings: first is General which includes Political, Commercial, Religious and the second one is Special which deals with certain nations. When one considers the scale of living and the rate of wages, it is easy to see that Chinese manufactures are certain to enter into very keen competition of Europe or America. The new Banking Consortium is the expression of a desire on the part of the powers to maintain the open door and to avoid a repetition of the scramble for spheres of influence and special privileges. Religious Contacts are not the place to deal at all fully with the manifold work of Christian missions, but there are certain aspects of the work which demand attention if people understand the position of China in the family of nations.
