ABSTRACT
The origins of speech are probably to be found in emotional exclamations and the imitative sounds which accompany imitative action. The inner urge to self-expression, joined with capacity for mimicry, not only led to language, but also, we may be confident, made natural the union of song and dance in which we have the primal elements of the drama.
