ABSTRACT

Thomas Malthus argued that population growth was a predictor of and would be checked by global problems including famine, war, and disease. He believed that each positive check was a natural consequence of its absence, in other words, long periods of food abundance, peace, and health would lead to geometric population growth. The Little Emperors were so dubbed by both Chinese and foreigners who foresaw the potential negative effects of Chinas One Child Policy introduced to curb rapid population growth and impending food shortage in the worlds most populous nation. Stein goes on to argues that this perhaps to time of the Reformation when Luther argued on behalf of a generation of Christians that they did not need the Church to talk to God. While rural migrant workers struggle in vain to be fully embraced by the urban environment, the homesteads they leave behind are rapidly being turned into urban land due to the widespread practice of government-led land appropriation.
