ABSTRACT
This chapter is an overview of the development of military theory and practice from Napoleon to the end of World War One, their interaction, in terms of the shape, scale, and scope of military operations, and the influence of technology. It is not a campaign or institutional history, but aims to portray the appearance and course of fundamental forces which have moulded warfare into its modern form.
