ABSTRACT
The audiology department is part of the health service. It can help by working with other practitioners, such as ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors and teachers of the deaf, to provide support to the child and family. Speech and language therapists offer support and advice to parents/careers of children with any type of communication problem, including deaf children. They help children to develop their communication skills in sign language or speech. The hearing support services and hearing impaired services are normally provided by the local authority and provide specialist services for deaf children and their parents/careers in the child's home, nurseries, playgroups, children's centres or schools and colleges teaching deaf children and young people. Services for deaf children will usually provide support by peripatetic members of staff who will travel to the child's home or educational setting to give direct teaching support to the deaf child or advice to parents and staff.
