ABSTRACT

The voice system provides the contrast between active and passive voice. Voice is a system in grammar clause, since it affects first, the relation between the subject and the rest of the proposition and second, the presence or absence of an object and an agentive complement. Voice in the verbal group clause organization is reflected in the structure of the verbal group as well as in the various configurations of S, P and C. The verbal group that realizes P in a passive clause is a passive verbal group and conversely for active. The active/passive contrast affects the relation of the S to the proposition; like the verb break are move and open. In the active clause there is no suggestion of any agency. The meaning of the passive voice can be summarized by saying that it implies the existence of an agent separate from the subject, whereas the active voice is inexplicit.
