ABSTRACT

Given a declarative clause, the most favourable conditions for B F sequence are illustrated in 4:

4a Nobody knows why they paid him (FB) 4b Why they paid him, nobody knows (B F)

Here the reported clause has a WH-binder and the dominant clause is negative. Contrast 4 with 5:

Sa Bill said that I was here (FB) Sb ?*That I was here Bill said (BF)

In this example the binder is that and the dominant clause is positive. The B F sequence is, if possible at all, very strongly marked for contrast with something in the context.
