Smell is a troubled and underappreciated sense. Smell has been called a “primitive, animal, instinctual, voluptuous,
erotic, egoistic, impertinent, libertine, frivolous and asocial sense.”4 It’s also been called the least valuable sense-the first one people would sacrifice if forced to choose among the senses.5
