ABSTRACT
In order to specify the nature and functions of anaphora in English and French, we must first have an idea of the range of anaphoric processes available in the two languages. The purpose of this chapter is to present a preliminary classification of this range, in order to provide a basis for the more detailed analysis of 'strict' nominal anaphora and predicate anaphora in Chapters 3 and 4 respectively. Examples of agreement phenomena, which I am also viewing as exhibiting anaphora, are presented and discussed in Chapter 6.
