ABSTRACT

Design anthropology consequently changes as the nature of boundaries, diversity and alterity change. Design anthropology is a set of skills and practices which work across the boundaries, relationships and contestations which criss-cross the political economy of design, negotiating the diverse, often unfeasible, aspirations of creativity and innovation. Design anthropology is therefore diverse and ever-changing. One of the most successful anthropologists in product and service innovation has been Susan Squires. The design successes of design anthropology and ethnography surround us, and across our world, skilled anthropological consultants are working away to build better, more appropriate goods and services. Invention, participation, agonism and the compulsion of crisis are all reasons to undertake design anthropology. Design anthropology works with a particular framework and understanding of humanity. Most design anthropology negotiates the boundaries and relations between institutions, people and communities and adapts to their changing nature and constitution in different values and social phenomena.
