ABSTRACT

It is the nature of depression to vacillate between remission and relapse throughout its life cycle, in many cases, with depressive symptoms present to varying degrees. This chapter focuses on treating and managing depression that involves psychological approaches. In contrast, Chapter 8 will focus entirely on biological interventions. The chief aim for any intervention is that symptom relief is brought about. This period of remission is characterized as a time where overall functioning is significantly improved and hopefully sustained for more extended periods. It is also the aim of treatment to reduce the likelihood of future relapse. For many, the first port of call is the GP. A host of options are available to help treat and manage depression. The most common include self-help strategies, talking therapies, and also medication.
