ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to reflect on what has already been presented and then look to the future to see what is on the horizon for managing and treating depression. Some of the items considered here might be more speculative in nature, although I have highlighted where this is the case. It may appear somewhat random. In part, the content here reflects my interests. However, I hope I have captured a broad range. One of the things we will ponder is the potential for utilizing current and future technologies to improve the quality of life of people with depression. An item that immediately springs to mind is the smartphone. Most of us have one, and most use it for activities other than making calls. Will future devices even have the option to actually call someone? To all intents and purposes, it appears to be a redundant feature. Pessimism aside, we shall examine some of the controversies and issues associated with the use of such tools, especially in terms of that wonderful oxymoron, social media.
