ABSTRACT
While New Communities are characterized by the sudden, rapid, and recent growth of their Latina/o communities and the changes associated with that growth, other Mexican-American communities in small Midwestern cities have much deeper roots. The regional history of Mexican-Americans in Chapter 2 indicates that people of Mexican descent have had a presence in the non-metro Midwest since at least the early years of the twentieth century. Where did these earlier communities form, and how do their landscapes compare to those of the New Communities?
