ABSTRACT

Young children need to be touched, for comfort, reassurance and security, and this is a powerful method of communication. Young From twelve months, babies are usually mobile and interested in everything. When children sit at a table or a highchair tray they should not need a lid or a spout on a cup by the age of eighteen months, but two handles may still be useful and close supervision is essential. Between twelve and eighteen months, toddlers gradually become more skilled at naming the people, animals and objects they point to and at requesting more information from those around them, which they absorb rapidly and easily. Finger rhymes and action songs are extremely valuable when introduced to and shared with children from eighteen months or younger. After the age of twelve months, and certainly by eighteen months, children need to understand and respond to the word No for their own safety.
