ABSTRACT

Introducing too many new words at once can be confusing and too difficult for young children to separate, define and remember. Repetition is important to enable children to learn both words and sentence structure. Hearing and enjoying words and language in this way enables babies and children to name and label objects, learn and practise vocabulary, put words together, absorb grammar and sentence structure, use logic and reason, develop imagination and enjoy the richness of flowing language. For some parents and carers the newly developing independence of their two year olds, which causes more challenging behaviour, comes as a surprise or even a shock. They may also find that their children continue to behave well when they are out or in the company of other people, but often lose control or exhibit defiance at home. Two year olds may begin to take an interest in the television programmes and DVDs created for young children, especially if they have older siblings.
