ABSTRACT

This chapter examines research findings on the advantages of diversity as well as the challenges of diversity in teams. It presents the major findings around the relationship between diversity and both team and organizational performance. The chapter deals with suggestions for managing diversity in teams based on best-known methods from diversity research. Studies have also revealed that the diversity beliefs of team members have an important influence on the team diversity–team performance relationship. The relationship between team diversity and team performance may also depend on timing effects. However, meta-analyses show that the effects between team diversity and both team attitudes and team performance tend to be more positive when the diversity in question is task related. The chair of the committee which produced the report explained that the Metropolitan Police have made progress in recruiting a more diverse workforce and appreciating diversity.
