ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the status of women both in the United States and throughout the world. It reviews information from several sources that conclude there is a gender gap whereby men have higher status and power in the world than women. The chapter discusses the outcomes of these gender roles and stereotypes including the glass ceiling, the glass cliff, the sticky floor, and the glass escalator. It explains why it may sometimes be difficult for women to reject these stereotypes and behave in counter-stereotypical ways. The chapter address the existing gender gaps between men and women in organizations. Gender research suggests that having ambiguous credentials will penalize women more than men. Gender has more connotations about how one is expected to behave as a result of one's biological sex. Organizations must have a zero-tolerance policy for sex discrimination, and they must be especially mindful of sexual harassment.
