ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the terminology including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and LGBTQIA. It describes the gender identity and sexual orientation, and presents figures on what proportion of the US population may be LGBT. The chapter examines the history of discrimination against the LGBT community as well as the relevant legislation protecting LGBT workers. It focuses on the life experiences of LGBT people compared to heterosexual people. The chapter also presents findings regarding LGBT families. The appellants are all Muslims who were assigned a male gender at birth based on their sexual organs but identify as being female. The United Kingdom and Ireland voted to include the words "sexual orientation" in the resolution, but they were outvoted 79 to 70 by the member countries. The company also agreed to hire an expert on sexual orientation, gender identity, and transgender training to develop a module on sexual orientation and gender identity issues in the workplace.
