ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book needs to adopt social and cultural theory that can help people make sense of the importance of events in people's lives, the importance of events in the maintenance of power and hegemony, and the limits of freedom to do certain things in these event spaces and practices. That means we have to develop a critical event studies (CES) that draws from the theoretical source of Marxism and its structural, post-structural, existential, feminist and intersectional developments. The book describes post-structuralism provides a critical framework through which we may find fruitful challenges and explorations of the role of events in lives, and the human agency that may yet be saved. Events may be viewed as spaces of spontaneous creativity and artwork, places of identity-work and spectacle and protest. Events do not necessarily have to be understood as mega-events, constructed by capitalism and the state.
