ABSTRACT

Reflecting on event and space in such ways leads us to think about the way the two are interlinked, and what that might mean for a critical approach to the study of events. The chapter discusses what informs how space can be construed within critical event studies (CES). It considers how space has been commonly discussed within much of the events management and event studies literature. In so doing we also explore why such a construction of space is problematic when adopting a critical approach to investigating events, while acknowledging that some of these issues have, in recent years, become increasingly recognized and considered by researchers who are active within mainstream approaches. The hodological character of managed event space establishes its construal within the discourse of events management; it combines the marketization of that space with a concomitant construction of it as an area where risk needs to be mitigated.
