ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Fong Bou Lung’s (FBL) management regime, demonstrating how Fong applied the kinship logic to his relations with employees at FBL, which further explains the key characteristics of the management of FBL: ignorance of the organizational charts, autonomy and agency, and holistic relations. The bong paai metaphor is used to highlight one important feature that characterizes Fong’s company: FBL is organized around personal relationships maintained by loyalty and dependence. The specificity of a person in FBL is defined by his or her specific relation with Fong. The jan cing mei management of FBL was manifested in three major ways: ignorance of the organizational chart, autonomy and agency, and holistic relations. Resembling the Japanese model, the jan cing mei management regime of FBL gave the employees an intense sense of job satisfaction through providing them autonomy as well as imposing on them holistic responsibility at the same time.
