ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the multiple ways to conceptualize a Leadership Development System were listed: succession planning, leadership pipeline initiatives, leadership pathways, and lattice. The Bush Institute at the George W. Bush Presidential Center featured Gwinnett County Public Schools in a case study in 2015 because of their work around leadership development. A well-crafted Leadership Development System takes into account human capital resources within the system and has a way of supporting each person on his or her professional continuum. More robust leadership systems then craft leadership development initiatives that are specific to those job roles. There are a multitude of possibilities when considering pathways for leadership development. Educational organizations need to identify their specific approaches to development and articulate the various pathways through which aspiring and current leaders prepared to meet the demands of the role of school leader. The system requires an organization to fully understand its philosophical approach to preparing leaders and to define each role within the system.
