ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a three-year research project , with Ken Jones, on whole school change. It explores two values and major issues that lie at the heart of schooling— the inclusion and wellbeing of students— and discusses the evidence about each in relation to the creative arts. The book focuses on the exemplification in the Rowan School portrait, but also includes vignettes of practice from other educational settings. It explores the importance of narrative and the imagination in changing teaching. The book also focuses on how a commitment to creating a rich -narrative environment in school can promote inclusion, wellbeing, recognition and respect, the values. It also discusses creativity and think about the benefits of learning in and through the arts. The book illustrates the impact of artists working in close collaboration with teachers and students.
