one day as we sat in his study overlooking the lake of Zurich, I asked Jung what had been the fundamental aim of all his life’s work, and he answered simply: “I wanted to understand…. To understand is my only passion. But also I have a doctor’s instinct. I want to help people when they are in pain. But to do that, I have to understand them.”
