ABSTRACT

In this chapter the aim is to explore themes arising from the use of new digital media in relation to developing literacy, particularly digital and multimodal literacy. The argument is that the use of new technologies has changed what we mean by literacy, with potentially profound implications for education. To illustrate these changes, a pilot study is presented involving the use of iPads by primary schoolchildren carried out for the Birmingham e-Learning Foundation (BeLF). 1 Together with an analysis of related technologies, including those explored in earlier chapters, the aim is to draw out themes for future research. These themes include the kinds of technologies needed to support personalised and self-directed learning, collaborative learning, inquiry-based learning, reflective and critical thinking.
