ABSTRACT

Metro-Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) picked up domestic distribution after the picture was favorably reviewed in London. MGM ceased its production in England in 1940, although it continued to lease the Denham studio until 1943, when it purchased a new headquarters for its British subsidiary – Elstree Studios in Borehamwood. MGM instead cast Cary Grant as her former husband and Jimmy Stewart as the reporter and assigned Joseph L. Mankiewicz to produce. MGM took advantage of Mickey Rooney's multiple talents by casting him in a musical in 1939, Babes in Arms. The perfect pairing of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland was best summed up in the New York Times review of Girl Crazy. Judy Garland sang three original songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane – 'The Trolley Song,' 'The Boy Next Door,' and 'Have one a Merry Little Christmas.' MGM teamed up Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in three more musicals produced by Arthur Freed.
