ABSTRACT

The new constitution of Northern Ireland was based on the government of Ireland Act, 1920; and the free state was created separately in 1922. The discussion of maternity work in Ireland may be better understood after its dispensary system has been described. There is a district nurse supported by a voluntary organisation, with the aid of grants for work done under child welfare and tuberculosis schemes. In Northern Ireland, in 1928, £6,463 were disbursed by the Central Government for the expense of approved expenditure by local authorities on the treatment of venereal diseases. Dr. Fulton's experience is that school medical work has materially increased the practice of private medical practitioners. It has doubtless also increased the work of dispensaries and hospitals. There are 170 dispensary doctors for Northern Ireland, and 550 doctors who certify for sickness insurance under the Insurance Act.
