ABSTRACT

The Affordable Care Act has opened the door to health insurance for millions of Americans who were previously uninsured. A RAND Corporation study released in May of 2015 found that since the Affordable Care Act's major provisions took effect, there has been an estimated net increase of 16.9 million people with insurance (Carman et al., 2015). It is estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and US The days of insurance policies in which the client pays a small co-pay and the insurer pays the rest with minimal paperwork, the clinician, are mostly ancient history now except for a few 'Cadillac' executive policies with exceptional healthcare and mental health coverage. This chapter considers personal values with regard to working with low-income clients. It proposes an empowerment model for therapists in private practice who are contracting with managed care companies.
