ABSTRACT

The Internship Phase, the period during which one have completed their graduate degree, but have not yet gained licensure, can be a challenging time in their professional life. Spending time as an intern (i.e. working under a licensed professional's supervision) is a requirement for licensure in all states. It can (and should) be an opportunity for learning, professional and personal development, and building connections that will last throughout your professional career. This chapter provides some guidelines for obtaining an internship that will offer the readers a dignified and direct pathway to licensure. Most interns will do best by landing a regular job at a non-profit agency, school, hospital, and so on. Most such employers will have some sort of retirement plan. Health insurance is a must, so buy an Affordable Care Act policy if one is not provided through their employer.
