ABSTRACT

At the Prime Phase, people stand at the crossroads. Working with a dream group or keeping a journal, even if these things have never appealed before, can be important avenues to tapping in to the Self. Some amount of solitude is an important consideration at this phase. Most of the people, in graduate training or sometime early in their careers, embrace a theoretical orientation that feels valid and useful to them. For the theory to sustain us in their work over the long haul, it must also fit their personality style. Studies have shown that effective therapists from different theoretical schools are more like each other than are effective and ineffective therapists from the same school (Carkhuff, 1977). The Prime Phase therapist has refined his/her theory and technique so that he/she can use them as a bridge between himself/herself and his/her patients, rather than as a barrier.
