ABSTRACT

Culturally, in Western society, money is quite often viewed as an indicator of personal worth. Of course, there are segments of society where the pursuit of money is frowned upon. In many indigenous cultures the idea of amassing wealth for oneself is quite a foreign one. A high value is placed on community and supporting one another. Many therapists find themselves stuck in the script of the Procrastinator. For this person, money is not a comfortable area of life, rather something to be avoided. Another money script all too common for therapists, especially women, is that of the Co-dependent. Like the Procrastinator, this script also has its roots in a discomfort around money. Working successfully with this money script will usually require the help of a couple's therapist, because the pattern is well established and there is significant secondary gain for both partners. This chapter outlines the steps toward increasing money consciousness and individuating from the money script inherited.
