ABSTRACT

This chapter examines research tools that are used to elicit L2 learners’ abilities in producing meaning in a communication. The most commonly used tools for eliciting pragmatic production are discussed, including discourse completion tests (DCTs), role plays, diaries, field notes, and corpora of naturally-occurring speech. As well as giving detailed description of the types of research methods, the chapter also highlights advantages and disadvantages of each method and informs readers about some of the factors involved in choosing the most suitable data collection tool to investigate L2 pragmatic production.
