ABSTRACT

This chapter describes current and cutting-edge research methods that have been used to investigate L2 pragmatic comprehension and perception. It examines types of multiple-choice tests (e.g., written tests, online listening tests) and discusses a wide array of data collection methods and tasks that are used to assess sociopragmatic and metapragmatic awareness. The chapter also includes information about elicitation tools used both in spoken mode (e.g., metapragmatic discussion, interviews, verbal protocols) and in written mode (e.g., diaries, journals, blogs). By discussing advantages and disadvantages of using each method, this chapter also provides helpful information on how L2 pragmatics researchers can utilize the most suitable tools to investigate language learners’ receptive pragmatic skills.
