ABSTRACT

This chapter combines the discussions of receptive and productive pragmatic knowledge in the interactive process of meaning making in communication. It describes interactional pragmatics and discusses qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches in interactional pragmatics research. The chapter examines contexts, co-acts, and activities that are central to discussions on meaning making in interaction, as well as multimodality in interactional pragmatics, including how researchers can focus on non-verbal communication (e.g., intonation, gesture) as one in-depth way of analyzing pragmatic phenomena.
