ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of the Empathy Cycle to connect with and engage the client during Support-for-Thought. In Support-for-Action, the coach will continue exploring the drawbacks to changing roles and then eventually flip the discussion so that the client deliberates over the advantages of staying where he is and working on his leadership abilities. Support-for-Thought is about connecting with and engaging the client. Connecting with the client occurs through an empathic exchange called the Empathy Cycle—in which both parties participate. The Empathy Cycle is composed of four inter-locking steps: Empathic Attention, Empathic Resonance, Expressed Empathy, and Received Empathy. Empathic Attention (EA) means giving the client your full and undivided attention in the present moment. The chapter addresses the International Coach Federation (ICF) competencies by the content of: establishing trust and intimacy with the client; coaching presence; active listening; powerful questioning; direct communication; and creating awareness.
