ABSTRACT

The heuristic approach provides the template for the methods and practices used in Challenge-for-Action. There are three types of experiments or action steps that put clients on the path to reaching their goals: informational experiments, cognition experiments, and behavioral experiments. Informational experiments are actions clients can take to gather information that will help them decide what cognitive and behavioral experiments they wish to try. Cognitive experiments are attempts at different ways of thinking and understanding to change how one behaves in or reacts to situations. Behavioral experiments mean trying new behaviors or acting differently to achieve the desired end state. In Challenge-for-Thought, well-formed outcomes are created. A well-formed outcome is: A positive statement of what is wanted, which includes demonstrable indicators of success, the attainment of which is under the control or direct influence of the individual seeking that outcome.
