ABSTRACT

Patients will be amplified and explained more fully by the doctor. Consumption is, to a limited extent, an infectious disease. The breath of consumptive persons is free from infection, except when coughing. Ordinary handkerchiefs, if ever used for expectoration, should be put into boiling water before they have time to become dry; or into a solution of a disinfectant, as directed by the doctor. Sunlight and fresh air are the greatest enemies of infection. The prevention of the inhalation of dust is an essential point in the treatment as in the prevention of consumption. This chapter also considers the matter from the standpoint of the treatment of the disease at home. The patient himself benefits from notification so far as both his domestic and industrial circumstances are concerned. The patient by allowing his case to be notified is contributing to the general health of the community.
