ABSTRACT
There are two general approaches to respond to the enormous economic pressures under which universities, particularly state universities in the United States, find themselves: decrease costs or increase revenues. There are many examples of the cost-cutting strategy, often by cutting or switching to cheaper instructors-a route to a largely (or entirely) adjunct faculty. Raising additional revenue nearly always involves increasing tuition, although some fun games are also played with course or program fees, or requirements that students live in expensive dorms, and so on.
