ABSTRACT
Academics are increasingly expected to demonstrate engagement and impact as part of their overall outcomes. Engagement describes the outreach and collaborative activities that academics undertake with other individuals, university groups or external stakeholders who seek to draw on their academic expertise. It supports the integration and translation of knowledge and practice beyond the university environment (Sandmann 2008; Sandmann et al. 2008). Impact can be defined as the capacity to extend the influence and reach of one’s research beyond academia, particularly through contributing to the enhancement of the economy, society, culture, national security, public policy or services, health, the environment, or quality of life. This enactment of scholarship to encourage public good has long been recognised as an important function of academic work (Boyer 1990).
