ABSTRACT

Messer-Davidow et al. (1993) suggest that disciplines act as instruments to establish a professional identity; identify problems; develop tools to address challenges; reward intellectual achievements; distribute status and recognition; encourage the enhancement of relevant expertise and capabilities; demarcate novices and experts; and encourage intellectual engagement, knowledge production and communication. New disciplines take time to evolve and to build a clear identity. They often emerge in response to identified needs that must be addressed, attracting passionate advocates who seek to make a better context for their colleagues and stakeholders.
