ABSTRACT

A notable feature of higher education development (HED) services is their variety and variability. There are many different ways that each service might be designed, depending on the executive expectations, capabilities of the HED group, target audience and desired impact. This chapter offers a broad framework as to the key functions that HED services generally fulfil. It illustrates the diversity of options that might be integrated, and highlights the importance of defining the HED identity, purpose and priorities. The development of a clear framework to support the design and management of the HED service ensures there is clarity as to who is being supported and how that support is delivered.
