ABSTRACT

62 Bespoke to Standardized discusses the challenges and advantages related to integrating traditional building materials and methods with contemporary construction practices. Mass production offers the potential to systematize materials that have remained outside of industrialized market systems. This chapter features two case studies that show how systems based on traditional methods have at turns become highly developed and integrated into mainstream practice or grown increasingly underutilized. Four case studies in this chapter illustrate how architects, builders, and other professionals are taking advantage of these resources and are working to bring them in line with contemporary standards and tastes.
