ABSTRACT

101 Local Engagement describes the benefits of working with raw resources and labor-intensive working methods, especially when these involve the collective participation of the wider community for which a building is built. This chapter focuses on six contemporary case studies that demonstrate how traditional materials and their related building processes can be used to encourage social interaction and influence people's lives in positive ways. Working in this way is not without its challenges, however, and the each project describes how architects and other professionals have addressed problems related to unskilled labor and distrust of older methods of construction.
