ABSTRACT
This chapter considers what constitutes good governance from three different viewpoints: from an expert, an executive member preparing papers and presentations to gain board support, and a chair of governors. A sound understanding of higher education (HE) governance, and the way in which leadership interfaces with the governance infrastructure, is essential for any executive leader. The leadership and stewardship responsibilities are exercised corporately and collectively by the university's governing body by the vice-chancellor or principal as chief academic officer, through shared governance arrangements with the senate, senatus or academic board and its sub-committees. The Council of University Chairs (CUC) Code outlines the Core Values of Higher Education Governance, building on the Nolan Principles of Public Life. Good governance and effective leadership delivering a high quality student experience and innovative teaching, ensuring student success and maintaining the UKs reputation for providing excellent HE leadership.
