ABSTRACT

One of the objectives of my research journey was to explore what hinders the understanding and practice of psychoanalysis in Hong Kong. As I could not study Hong Kong society as a whole, I  specifically focused on local counselors and how they listen to their clients. This chapter will introduce the main tools that were developed and used for this research. Because both the target population and I are not native English speakers language barriers represented a concrete obstacle for conducting quality in-depth interviews, so a quantitative approach was preferred. Furthermore, quantitative research was deemed to be appropriate for testing a number of hypotheses that emerged from the literature presented in the previous chapter.
